Biography

Born in Tbilisi (Georgia), after studying journalism, she graduated with full marks in her home town’s Conservatory. She has been awarded the Presidential Order of Excellence, one of the top distinctions of the Republic of Georgia for her contribution to culture and promotion of Georgian cause in the world; she has been decorated Cavaliere della Stella d‘Italia.

She has won several international Competitions as: Concours International de Chant de la Ville de Toulouse, “Francisco Viñas” in Barcelona, BBC Singer of the World in Cardiff and the GBOSCAR award for excellence in Opera and Ballet.

She completed her musical studies at the Accademia del Teatro alla Scala under Leyla Gencer, Luciana Serra and Luigi Alva, taking then part in the following productions at La Scala: Iphigénie en Aulide, Boris Godunov (Fjodor), Oberto conte di San Bonifacio (Cuniza).

She made her debut in Moïse et Pharaon (Marie) conducted by Riccardo Muti for the opening of the season at Teatro alla Scala, where she then appeared also in: Falstaff (Meg); Evgeni Onegin (Olga); Idomeneo (Idamante); Cherevichki (Solocha); Faust (Siebel); Nabucco (Fenena); Die lustige Witwe (Valencienne).

She has been immediately recognized worldwide as one of the major talents of her generation and quickly appeared in: Les contes d’Hoffman (Niklhausse) in Turin and Hamburg; La damnation de Faust (Marguerite) in Parma and Liège; Così fan tutte (Dorabella) in Genova, at Covent Garden in London, at the Suntory Hal in Tokyo, Valencia; Carmen in Graz, Latvian, Naples, Otsu, Bunka Kaikan in Tokyo, Bologna, Hamburg, Seoul, Bari, San Diego, Macerata, Sassari and at the Marinsky; Nabucco (Fenena) at the Arena di Verona, in Piacenza and at Festival Castell de Perelada; Lady Macbeth of Mtsenk (Sonjetka) in Barcelona; Luisa Miller (Federica) in Naples, at the Bayerische Staatsoper in Munich, Barcelona, with the Budapest Symphony Staat Orchestra; Idomeneo (Idamante) in Hamburg; Rigoletto (Maddalena) in Madrid, at the Metropolitan in New York, at the Bogotà Opera House, in Macerata, Genova, Koln, and for Rai with Placido Domingo; Evgeni Onegin (Olga) at Metropolitan Opera in New York, at Covent Garden in London and at the Chicago Lyric Opera; Moïse et Pharaon (Sinaide) at the Salzburg Festival and in Rome; Clemenza di Tito (Sesto) in Hamburg; Ariodante in Frankfurt; Lucrezia Borgia (Maffio Orsini) at the Bayerische Staatsoper in Munich; Madama Butterfly (Suzuki) in Tokyo; Aida (Amneris) in Naples, Bergen, Liege and Bari; Cavalleria rusticana (Santuzza) in Avignon; Norma (Adalgisa) in Beirut; Romeo et Juliette (Stephano) at the Arena di Verona; Capuleti e Montecchi (Romeo) in Bergen.

She has worked, among many others, with such important conductors as: Roberto Abbado, Paolo Arrivabeni, Fabio Biondi, Daniele Callegari, Patrick Fournillier, Daniel Harding, Philippe Jordan, Fabio Luisi, Nicola Luisotti, Zubin Mehta, Riccardo Muti, Gianandrea Noseda, Daniel Oren, Plasson, Daniele Rustioni.

Her intense concert activity has seen her peform: Concerto di Natale at Chiesa di San Marco in Milan conducted by M° Muti; Dvoràk‘s Requiem at the Berliner Philharmonie; Schubert‘s Messa n °6 at the Amsterdam Konzertgebouw; Verdi‘s Messa da Requiem at the Bustan Festival in Beirut; Beethoven‘s IX Sinfonia at the Accademia di Santa Cecilia; a Recital at the Wigmore Hall in London; a concert dedicated to the memory of Leyla Gencer in Istanbul.

Among her recent and future engagements: Carmen in Liège and Valladolid; Aida (Amneris) in Bologna, Hong Kong, Liège, at NCPA in Beijing and in La Coruna; Alceste in Florence directed by Pier Luigi Pizzi; Rigoletto at San Carlo in Naples, at Palau de les Arts Reina Sofia in Valencia, at the Shanxii Grand Theatre and at Liceu in Barcelona; Le trouvère (Azucena) at the Verdi Festival in Parma conducted by Roberto Abbado and directed by Robert Wilson as well as, in the italian version, conducted by Pinchas Steinberg at Teatro Comunale in Bologna and in Palma de Mallorca; La forza del destino (Preziosilla) in Liège and Bologna; Les contes d’Hoffmann (Giulietta) at Liceu in Barcelona; Verdi’s Messa da Requiem with Orchestre Philharmonique de Montecarlo conducted by M° Gianluigi Gelmetti; Nabucco (Fenena) at Teatro Petruzzelli in Bari; Prokofiev’s L’angelo di fuoco di Prokofiev and Madama Butterfly (Suzuki) at Teatro Real in Madrid; Evgenij Onegin (Olga) at Teatro San Carlo in Naples; the title role in La lupa and the world premiere of Marco Tutino’s Il berretto a sonagli (Assunta Labella) at Teatro Massimo Bellini in Catania; Puccini’s Edgar (Tigrana) at Opéra de Nice and Teatro Regio in Turin.
